Shore Miles Gulf of Cleveland

How it works

Your miles, laid along the lake

The idea

Lake Erie's shore runs past more than a dozen harbor towns. Shore Miles adds up the distances you cover on foot, by bike, by wheelchair or on the water, wherever you are, and shows how far along the lake that would take you. It is a way to give everyday exercise a destination.

How distances are measured

Each route is a list of real towns. A leg is the great-circle distance between two town centres, worked out on this server from their latitude and longitude (rounded to a hundredth of a degree) on an Earth of radius 3,958.8 miles. Straight legs cut across bays, points and river mouths, so the real shoreline is longer than any route here. Harbor Run West, for example, comes to 54.1 mi.

The map

The map is schematic: the lake is drawn as straight lines through the harbor towns, not as a coastline, and it is not for navigation.

Who runs it

An independent site, powered by WeldonPC.com. “Gulf of Cleveland” is a playful nickname for the city's stretch of Lake Erie.
